An Open Table where Love knows no borders

Tahlia Liturgical Baptist Church

No promotional pitch has been received for this name, but when it was put forward as a homework exercise, the following comments were made:

  • Tahlia is a Hebrew word that means dew or mist ( i.e .broken water) rising from God (our base)
  • It incorporates the idea that our words come from God and both disperse to the land and from the land in a way that supports life.
  • The icon would be three blue waves (moving water) with a kookaburra rising into the cloud.
  • It’s a pretty name and also a feminine one which I find refreshing!  I like the meanings, especially that God is coming up from the ground, not down from the sky.  And I think putting ‘liturgical’ in the name works well too.
  • The domain name is available.

Something a bit different. I think ‘liturgical’ is a good clue to our worship style.

I like it too, and our liturgical style is something I think is important to our identity and that I would like to include in a name. But I worry it’s too little-known a term. I have had to explain it many a time- mainly to non church-goers, but I think even many church-goers might not be able to define it.

The name invites curiosity. But may be just too vague. Many of the above features are very positive.

Too obscure

I feel like we’d be forever answering questions about where Tahlia is. And then once we explained that it wasn’t a place, we’d have to answer the follow up question about what it means.

Or who! Sounds more like a person’s name to me, possibly giving the idea we are named after a prominent Tahlia.

The relative obscurity of the name is not as much a barrier for me. Pairing it with the word Liturgical makes all the difference. By itself – as in Tahlia Baptist Church it would raise a lot more questions as to identity.

This feels to me like a girls name picked out of thin air. I don’t like that it has to be explained. Liturgical describes what we are but it’s not all that we are. I didn’t know what the word meant before coming to this church, so I think it too needs to be explained. I think it could be offputting. If you Google “Liturgical” I think it’s both helpful & unhelpful.

This name is OK but is not particularly memorable (yet) and lacks any defining connection to the church or its history. If we had a remembered person of that name…
